Tells him that if he were well he would be marching with the communists in New York City today; is sorry to have missed his 85th birthday; wants to come and see him if he receives visitors; additional handwritten note N.B. saying: I am proposing to dedicate my vol. of collected poems to Wm. L. Stidger.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
